Kökar, August 2017:
I have no idea what I will do with these 3D scans taken from negative corners in Kökar, here an impression in 2DÖ
starting with icebergs, to volcanic stone and architecture..
We had the nice opportunity to exhibit in a house that was just finished being built. Before the people moved in, we sculpture students moved in for 2 days with site specific work, sculpture, installation, photo and so on. Since no walls are parallel in this house ,I could meet my corners and the tetrahedra again, these corners in stone I had encountered on the islands this summer.
It is not getting very big, but it is very invasive and many gardeners regretted their decision to plant it. Many thanks to the Gesamtschule Hennef West, for letting me cut their bamboo in the school garden and to Silke to provide the transport, it was impossible to drag the 4-5m long poles home by bike or in the tramway..
Since the Beethoven Hall in Bonn is being renovated and the copper roof is replaced, the sculpture students inherited the dismantled, tarnished old roof plates. Eventually there will be an exhibition in the next years of artworks made out of the 65 plates( not only transformed by me;).
This is plate no 1:
Since the 15th of September I started a Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the Alanus University in Alfter near Bonn. Since then I have been very busy, it is quite a different modus to study than to be in a residency on an island.. I have been working a lot, all is well documented but might not get shown while still being in process… You will have to be patient again, but I promise my best…
View from my window where I live in Alfter
Walking to school (5 min). The buildings on the left are painting studios.
view on Bonn , I am standing right beside the sculpture studios..
On the other side of the school are trails for walking in the woods, I can really not complain about my life in crowded Germany..
Vartiosaari, an island right beside Helsinki, is still a paradise , but unfortunately a huge residential development project will take over the island. One of the reasons why the symposium had chosen the site.. 10 days before the symposium took place, several artists from the nordic countries had started site specific art works on Vartiosaari. The opening was part of the symposium and very successful and inspiring. Nature, Art, nice people and food, best atmosphere..
Before going to Germany, I had four days in Helsinki where I attended the Arts in the Environment Nordic Symposium, a great event held on different Islands close to Helsinki, with many interesting talks and meetings, the right preparation for my masters or continuation for my residencies. I had also time to visit Helsinki’s museums and markets, and even to get a private tour to the Luomus Geological collection of the University of Helsinki.
I had to stay overnight since the ferry arrives at 9 pm in Korppoo, if ever you pass by that area I can warmly recommend the Faffas B&B, a traditional Finnish farm house, very cosy and right beside the barefoot path, a beautiful sculpture trail. Yes, the bus to Turku still leaves right in front on the main road, but only once per day..
Although it is already month ago since I left Kökar, my memories are still fresh, it is impossible to cut off completely with any island I am getting attached to..
